How this calculator works
Electric sauna heaters are sized to room volume. We start from your interior length × width × height, then add load for heat-loss surfaces: a glass door, a glass wall, or uninsulated / outdoor walls all pull heat and require more power. The result follows the same rule Harvia and HUUM publish — roughly 1 kW per 45–50 cu ft, with about 1.2 m³ of extra load per m² of glass or uninsulated surface — then rounds up to the nearest real heater. It is an accurate starting point; final selection should confirm voltage and the manufacturer’s chart for your exact model. Not sure? Talk to a specialist →
Quick Answer
What size sauna heater do I need?
Most home saunas need a heater rated at about 1 kW per 45–50 cubic feet of interior volume. As a fast rule of thumb, a 4–6 person sauna (roughly 250–400 cu ft) needs a 6–9 kW heater. Add about 1 kW for a glass door, and more for a full glass wall or an uninsulated outdoor / barrel room. Measure your room’s length × width × height, then round up to the nearest available heater size — or use the calculator above to do it instantly.
| Sauna size | Interior volume | Recommended heater | Example packages |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1–2 person | Up to ~175 cu ft | 3.5–4.5 kW | Harvia Vega 3.5, HUUM DROP 4.5 |
| 2–3 person | ~175–250 cu ft | 4.5–6 kW | HUUM DROP 6, Harvia KIP 6 |
| 3–4 person | ~250–320 cu ft | 6–7.5 kW | HUUM CORE 6.5, HUUM DROP 7.5 |
| 4–5 person | ~320–400 cu ft | 8–9 kW | Harvia Spirit 8, HUUM CLIFF 9 |
| 5–6 person | ~400–530 cu ft | 9–10.5 kW | HUUM STEEL 10.5, HIVE Mini 10.5 |
| 6–8 person | ~530–800+ cu ft | 12–18 kW | HUUM HIVE 12 / 15 / 18 |
Chart follows the volume-based method published by Harvia and HUUM (approx. 1 kW per 1 m³ / 35–50 cu ft, with added load for glass and uninsulated surfaces). Confirm the final rating and electrical requirements for your exact model with a Sauna Company USA specialist.

Sauna Heater Sizing — Common Questions

What size sauna heater do I need?
Sauna heaters are matched to room volume. As a rule of thumb you need about 1 kW of heater power for every 45–50 cubic feet of sauna interior. Measure your room's length × width × height, then round up to the nearest available heater size. A glass door, glass wall or uninsulated (outdoor / solid-log) walls all lose heat and require more power — the calculator above adds that load automatically.
Does a glass door change the heater size?
Yes. Glass radiates far more heat than an insulated wall. Following Harvia and HUUM's published charts, roughly 1.2 m³ (about 42 cu ft) of extra heating load is added per square meter of glass or uninsulated surface. A standard glass door adds a modest amount; a full glass front or large window adds significantly more. Check the boxes in the calculator to include this.
Can a heater be too powerful for my sauna?
An oversized heater heats faster but can cycle harder and use more energy than needed; an undersized one struggles to reach and hold 175–195°F. The goal is a heater whose rated volume range comfortably covers your room. The calculator recommends the best-fit size and shows a step up for extra headroom (useful for cold climates or frequent quick heat-ups).
What else do I need besides the heater?
Every electric heater needs a control unit and sauna stones, and must be wired by a licensed electrician to the correct voltage (most 6 kW+ heaters need 240V, single or three-phase). Our heater packages bundle the heater, control and stones together. Talk to a specialist to confirm the electrical requirements for your model.
How accurate is this calculator?
It uses the same volume-based method Harvia and HUUM publish and is an accurate starting point for the vast majority of home saunas. For unusual ceilings, commercial rooms, or borderline sizes, have our team confirm the final selection against the manufacturer's chart for your exact model — it's free.
